HKIAA and Tsinghua University’s Department of Astronomy Signed MoU to Strengthen Research Collaboration

30 Dec 2025

The Hong Kong Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (HKIAA) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has entered into a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Astronomy at Tsinghua University, marking a significant step forward in strengthening astronomical research collaboration between the two institutions.

The MoU was signed on 22 December 2025 at HKU as part of a broader HKU–Tsinghua strategic partnership event, during which five MoUs were concluded across diverse fields including public health, engineering, law, and astronomy. The ceremony was witnessed by HKU Acting President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Wong and Tsinghua University President Professor Li Luming.

Professor Man Hoi Lee signed the MoU on behalf of HKIAA, while Professor Di Li, Chair of Tsinghua University’s Department of Astronomy, signed on behalf of Tsinghua. The agreement will provide an institutional framework to promote closer links between the two groups and to support long-term collaboration in frontier areas of astronomy and astrophysics.

As part of the astronomy programme of the visit, Professor Li met with HKU faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and postgraduate students for discussion after the signing. This provided an opportunity for HKIAA and Tsinghua colleagues to engage directly, introduce their current research, and begin exploring concrete collaboration under the new MoU.

HKIAA looks forward to working closely with the Department of Astronomy at Tsinghua University to advance cutting-edge research in astronomy and astrophysics and to provide new opportunities for students and early-career researchers in both institutions.
