About HKIAA

The Hong Kong Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (HKIAA) at The University of Hong Kong is a premier research hub dedicated to exploring the fundamental mysteries of the universe.

HKIAA was established in November 2025 to advance excellence across all major areas of astronomy and astrophysics—from cosmology and high-energy phenomena to planetary science and multi-messenger astronomy. The Institute currently brings together more than 20 full and affiliated members from six leading institutions, along with a growing cohort of junior researchers, to form a dynamic centre for world-class research, innovation, and international collaboration.

Strategically positioned in Hong Kong, HKIAA acts as a vital bridge connecting the global scientific community with China’s rapidly growing astronomical enterprise, while fostering strong partnerships across the Greater Bay Area and beyond. Through cutting-edge discovery, interdisciplinary dialogue, and the cultivation of future scientific leaders, HKIAA aims to inspire, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to humanity’s understanding of the cosmos.
