The Hong Kong Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (HKIAA) at the University of Hong Kong is pleased to announce that it has officially become a member of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) Collaboration.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing this collaboration was signed by Professor Bing Zhang, Founding Director of HKIAA, and Professor Zhen Cao, LHAASO Spokesperson of the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Chinese Academy of Sciences.
As a member of the LHAASO Collaboration, HKIAA researchers—including Professor Jane Lixin Dai, Professor Stephen Chi Yung Ng, and Professor Bing Zhang—will contribute their expertise in multi-wavelength observational and theoretical studies. Their collaborative research will focus on high-energy phenomena, including stellar-scale explosions, supermassive black holes, pulsars, and supernova remnants, while also contributing to analysis software development.
LHAASO, located at 4,410 meters above sea level on Haizi Mountain in Sichuan, China, is one of the world’s most sensitive ultra-high-energy gamma-ray observatories. This membership marks a significant step in strengthening Hong Kong’s role in the global high-energy astrophysics community and fostering closer research collaboration between HKIAA and IHEP.
